Krater, Building Pit Bežigrajski krater, entry via Peričeva street, Ljubljana
tea drinking ceremony
Despite the ecological renaissance which places sustainability at the heart of public ethics, the contemporary administrative frameworks in Slovenia still seem to restrain the proliferation of regenerative material cultures. As one of the production platforms of the biennial, the Krater collective, in dialogue with Atelier LUMA and BC Architects, has researched rammed earth architecture and locally sourced building materials. Materials such as clay, wood or straw bales are either imported from abroad, and consequently too expensive for most, or used in construction illegally. As the legislation currently stands, local landscapes seem to appear as forbidden vernaculars.
The rich resources of the rewilded site have enabled material experimentation with wild clay, invasive plants and gravel as construction materials for building a site-specific rammed earth tea pavilion for BIO27. The new space is now set to host a series of assemblies with practitioners and decision-makers who will, during the round table, experience a performative tea ceremony with herbal tea in wild clay vessels sourced from the urban site.
The series discussing the legal, social and ecological implications of designing with local materials will hopefully support a fresh start in making these forbidden practices part of the vernacular again.
This tea-drinking ceremony will be held in a special non-formal atmosphere. If you are a designer, creative or practitioner of sustainable design and are using natural materials for your products, join us for this special edition of the ceremony!
Due to the size of the space, only eight people can attend. THE EVENT IS FULL!
